about

“The Massacre of Glencoe” which took place on February 13th, 1692, is one of the most memorable event in Scottish history, particularly for clan MacDonald.
Scottish music has of course contributed to this memory : my own version takes part in this remembrance with a new arrangement of both a bagpipe tune and a song by Jim McLean (“The Massacre of Glencoe”), released in 1963.

« Le massacre de Glencoe » qui a eu lieu le 13 février 1692 est l'un des événements les plus mémorables de l'histoire écossaise, en particulier pour le clan MacDonald.
La musique écossaise a bien sûr contribué à cette commémoration : ma propre version y participe aussi avec un nouvel arrangement composé à la fois d'un air de cornemuse et d'une chanson de Jim McLean ("The Massacre of Glencoe"), sortie en 1963.

lyrics

(chorus)
Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe
And covers the grave O’ Donald
And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
And murdered the house o’ MacDonald

They came in the blizzard we offered them heat
A roof for their heads, dry shoes for their feet
We wined them and dined them, they ate all our meat
And they slept in the house of MacDonald
…/…
They came in the night when the men were asleep
This band o’ Argylles through snow soft and deep
Like murdering foxes among helpless sheep
They slaughtered the house o’ MacDonald
…/…
Some died in their beds at the hand of the foe
Some fled in the night, were lost in the snow
Some lived to accuse them for struck the first blow
But gone was the house o’ MacDonald

Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe
And covers the grave O’ Donald
And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe
And murdered the house o’ MacDonald
(twice)
